Pretty much anything that can be said about music/painting etc is also valid for technical content and journalism. There are things that I agree and things that bother me.

I'd agree that people who create content should OWN it and should be the recipients of benefits around it. But sometimes the rules are such that it makes it impractical.

Lemme take an example - when we attend a concert, even if they inform me that we cannot record the music - do they give me an option to BUY the recording of the concert. If they do - a few people might not 'break the law'. Is it wrong to want to relive and enjoy the experience again - if we are willing to pay for it?

I fully agree that there would still be people wanting to get something for free - and that's plain wrong. But there are some instances where we don't have a structure to pay for it. I think that most legal rules should also make it practical for people and then expect them to 'comply' with the laws.

Re: Piracy, Copyright Law and Social Trends

its an important topics nowadays.thanks for sharing it.Visit this site for new song (www.newenglishsong.com )

Re: Partners In Crime – Documentary Review

Vats - You're on a slippery slope on most of these points. Remember the times when one took 'copies' of books? How's that any different at all? I am not sure which all of these I'd term piracy??? (and the concept is the same across books, paintings, music and even software)

1. Someone singing a song in their school/college fest without the singer's permission (most agree that's not piracy as it's not done for profit)
2. A singer 'inspired' by another song that they heard somewhere, but which they dont recollect later (!!!)
3. A small 'dhun' embedded inside a larger composition.
4. Recording a song (on your iphone) at a musical event
5. Recording/copying a song from your friend over to your digital collection (does sharing btw spouse/family make it legal?)
6. A cheap 'duplicate' of the Mona Lisa hanging on a hook at home.

Most of the above might not get dubbed under the piracy bracket. We - conveniently - assume that piracy is just the buying of songs/movies from the roadside vendor or downloading from torrents. The - not really perfect - logic that I'd go with is that if someone is not stealing to make a profit and if its for personal/friends and family entertainment - it should be ok.

Re: Why People Don’t Talk About Pirate Consumers

I wonder why everyone in india is orange skinned

Re: 9 Beatles Songs Influenced By India

I don't hear it! This post and the one on Kun Faya Kun was to showcase MySwar.com recommendations. MySwar.com recommends songs (Songs Like This section) to its users based on a number of musical attributes we have catalogued for each song and an algorithm we've built on top of that data. I didn't manually pick these recommendations. That said, I agree the title could have been better.

The idea of MySwar.com recommendations is not to box songs by Genre (although that's an important attribute) but to look at songs more holistically. I would really appreciate feedback from you on the following:
1) Can you see people who like Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar also liking the other songs listed on this post.
2) Conversely, did you see any song in this list which made you go WTF (look at this post - http://musicmachinery.com/2... - for a description of the WTF Test).

Your feedback will help us improve our recommendation algorithm.

Re: Mavrix Monthly Update January 2012

Composer surely got the credit in the film, on the Records everywhere.. So can't understand this ----> " None of the original artists were credited for the Jhumroo version of the songs." Do you mean that u were expecting the Jhumroo album/film to have credited the source which was not given, which actually is not a norm in the industry anyway!!

slightly disappointed at whatever I read here today.

Had huge expectations

Re: If You Like Kun Faya Kun

Can you elaborate please. I would understand if you disagreed with the concept of a rating - that's just a matter of opinion - but it doesn't make sense to me that you agree with the concept of having a rating but disagree with a formula to come up with it. Anytime you have a number, you can have a way to calculate it. In fact, having a framework/formula to come up with rating is far more meaningful that pulling a number out of thin air.
2. Please re-read the post (and the prior one). There is a parameter for originality. I rate Composition as I would rate the song assuming it was original. I rate Originality separately.
3. I do refer to 100 miles and link to it. I also explain my score for Originality for Jab Koi Baat Bigad Jaaye.

Re: If You Like Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar

The title is misleading especially if you consider the varied genres you have picked here?

Should have looked better (my view) if Kaifi sir's name was mentioned in the headline.

To an 'anpadh' like me it is looking like the blogger is trying to make a 'startling revelation' rather than introducing listeners to some pure gems as you have. :)

Re: The Formula To Rate Music – Some Examples

Can never appreciate any 'formula' for music rating. Point taken (pun!). I guess you are right but I believe the graph I used does get my message across.

2. The y coordinate does stand for the number of songs. Updating post to indicate that. This chart represents ALL Bollywood songs in the MySwar database from 1971 to 2010, which is as comprehensive a database as any that I am aware of. It is representative of the Bollywood universe for the last 4 decades. Note: I have excluded from this analysis, the Filmi genre and genres that don't have significant influence in Bollywood.

3. I linked to the Genre page on MySwar to indicate all the Genres that influence Bollywood music. MySwar tags up to 3 genres for each Bollywood song. To use your example, Colonial Cousins' Krishna Nee Begane Baro would would be slotted as Carnatic, Sugam, Pop. If this song were included in my analysis it would count in three slots - Carnatic, Sugam and Pop.

Thanks for your comment!

Re: India Losing Music Genres Due To Bollywood?

Interesting but couple of observations:

1. The line graphs are inappropriate to convey this data. At least a grouped bar graph would have worked since there is no real need to connect the genres.

2. There is no explanation what the y coordinate stands for. Possibly number of songs. But how representative is it of the entire universe of Bollywood songs to derive any conclusions about the industry?

3. The analysis fails to categorize Bollywood music per se. You started out by allowing that Bollywood music is a melting pot of many genres. Then how could it be split into water-tight compartments? Where does a fusion number from Colonial Cousins fall?

Sorry if this was too critical. But I love Data interpretation and found these aspects disturbing.

Re: MySwar Beta Announcement – Reactions And How We Are Responding

I read almost complete thread.
